The
hall of fame for abolitionists is located on the second floor of the Smithfield
Community Center
(SCC), 5255 Pleasant Valley Road, Peterboro, New
York.
Banners
for each of the 2005 inductees, made possible by sponsors and the New
York Council for the Humanities, were unveiled at
the Commemoration of the Inductees held at Morrisville
State
College October 21, 2006.
These banners, plus an introductory banner, were moved to the upstairs assembly room in
August 2007 at the conclusion of a restoration project. Banners for the 2007 NAHOF
Inductees will be unveiled at the NAHOF Commemoration on October 25, 2008. The names of
persons and organizations who donate at least fifty dollars to support the project are
placed on the banner.
The
Smithfield
Community Association was formed in 1992 when the SCC was in need of serious repairs.
Through the decade the Town of Smithfield
and the Smithfield
Community Association have partnered to restore the historic structure.

1994 the Smithfield
Community Center
was placed on the State and National Register of Historic Places.
In
2004 the Smithfield
Community Center
was designated as a site on the Heritage NY Statewide Underground Railroad Trail and in
2006 was designated as a site and the symbol of the Madison County Freedom Trail.

Smithfield
Community Center
is receiving matching funds for site development from Heritage NY
and Heritage NY
consultants are also working with the Smithfield
Community Association to determine site interpretation for the historic building.
The
Smithfield
Community Association continues to raise funds to complete the site improvements to the
assembly room, office and storage space, the entrance to the building, the foyer, the
public bathrooms, and an elevator.

this time visitations to the Hall of Fame are by appointment at 315-684-3262. Visitors in
2007 included fourth graders and eighth graders, as well as travelers from South
Africa and Western
